Here’s how to help your kids plant a few green beans this summer
9 December 2014
Sprinkle a handful of general fertiliser granules per square metre over the soil.
Make rows about 60-70cm apart and position seeds 10-15cm apart.
Climbing beans need some sort of lattice or tipi for support.
When the plants are at the two-leaf stage, apply a side dressing of 1-2 teaspoonfuls of LAN per running metre of row.
Pick the pods when young for a higher harvest yield over a longer period; this allows the plant to continue to produce more seeds. If the pods are allowed to mature, the plant will start dropping off flowers and young fruit, and even cease to produce flowers.
