    A Lifestyle that Benefits Eyesight

Keep your peepers in tip-top condition with these top tips

    October 19, 2014

Did you know a balanced diet and exercise plan could help the appearance and functioning of your eyes? Dr Nicky Welsh, clinical head of ophthalmology at Wits’ Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg, says, ‘Those dark circles under the eyes can be yesterday’s news with regular exercise, fresh air, correct nutrition and the correct eye wear.’ Nicky recommends:

    • Regular exercise to improve blood circulation, which improves the oxygen levels in all vital organs, including your eyes.
    • Protecting your eyes from UV rays. 85% of rays are reflected back from water, sand or other highly reflective surfaces, and tend to put unnecessary strain on our eyes.
    • Get plenty of antioxidant-rich foods such as crunchy vegetables, nuts and fruit with high levels of vitamins A and C, zinc, selenium and essential fatty acids.
    • Ditch the cigarettes. Smoking exposes your eyes to high levels of oxidative stress, and increases your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
    • Take regular breaks as eyes are sensitive organs and easily become fatigued in an office environment.
