    Pattern Pleasure

By changing a rolling pin into a pattern roller you have a clever way to decorate any kind of fabric or paper

    13 January 2015

    You Will Need

    • template
    • rolling pin
    • self-adhesive foam squares (ours are 1 x 1cm, precisely the same as one block on the graph paper)
    • suitable paint (for fabric or paper)
    • sponge roller
    • graph paper
    • carbon paper
    • masking tape
    • pencil

1 Cut a piece of graph paper to fit right around your rolling pin and design your pattern in blocks on it. Use the template or your own design. Each block must be exactly the same size as your foam blocks. Ensure that your pattern repeats neatly over the roller.

2 Use masking tape to stick a piece of carbon paper and then the graph paper with the completed pattern onto the roller. Trace the pattern blocks all around their outer lines so that your design is transferred to the rolling pin.

3 Carefully remove both the graph paper and carbon paper. Make sure that each pattern block is clearly traced.

4 Stick your foam blocks over the pattern blocks on the roller.

5 Carefully pull off the plastic layer from the foam blocks.

6 Stick strips of masking tape between the open rows of your design – this will help prevent the paint from ending up in these rows on your fabric or paper.

7 Have the fabric or paper that you want to decorate ready, then use the sponge roller to apply paint over the foam blocks. Carefully pull off the masking tape from between the rows.

8 Roll the paint carefully onto your fabric or paper.
