Life and career coach Anna Goldstein shares with us the language to avoid that isn’t office-friendly. Here’s the top six:
1 ‘I hate…’
It’s too harsh. Instead, describe specifics you don’t like about a plan.
2 ‘It’s not my fault.’
Even if it’s true, it sounds defensive and won’t get people to value you.
3 ‘I’m an idiot.’
Women put themselves down when they’re embarrassed about not understanding – stop it!
4 ‘I’ll try.’
This implies that you aren’t sure you’ll succeed and are leaving the door open to failure.
5 ‘I’m confused.’
It insinuates that the other person did a bad job explaining. Instead say, ‘Just to clarify…’
6 ‘You should have…’
Replace it with something more positive, such as ‘Next time you can…’
