    Water Lover

Garden World horticulturist JJ van Rensburg answers all your gardening queries

    20 December 2014

    Reader’s Question
I’d like to know what I could plant in a pot at the base of my gutter’s downpipe. Obviously the plant has to like water, but it can’t grow too big. And this spot never gets any sun. Is there anything you can recommend?

    JJ’s Answer
You actually have quite a few choices, Consider horsetail (Equisetum), arum lilies, thatching reed (Chondropetalum) and other rushes, such as Juncus effusus or even Acorus, not to mention all the varieties of papyrus. All these plants should fare well in damp conditions.
