Summer Gardening Tips

Give your garden a little extra attention this summer

• Water early in the day.
• Make sure there is always fresh water for birds and pets.
• In winter rainfall regions, hose down plants regularly to remove damaging salt deposits carried by wind.
• Plant out a few lettuce seedlings at a time, and harvest young leaves for salads.
• Keep a watch for yellow and black caterpillars that tunnel into the leaves and bulbs of nerine, clivia and amaryllis. Spray with Margaret Roberts Biological Caterpillar insecticide.
• After a hailstorm, don’t be in a hurry to remove damaged leaves as these help protect new growth from sunburn.
