    Drab to fab: Week 2

Another step toward boosting your garden is to love your lawn

    September 16, 2014

A patchy lawn will recover during the summer with regular watering. But if you want a vivid green beautiful lawn by the end of September, you can achieve it in four easy steps!

    1 Aerate
Cut your lawn short and then pierce holes in it with a garden fork, which allows fertiliser to reach the roots while also adding more oxygen to the soil.
    2 Fertilise
Use a 3:2:1 formulation to encourage root growth.
    3 Topsoil
Cover the lawn with a thin layer of good, fresh topsoil – dumping dead subsoil on top may damage or even kill your lawn.
    4 Irrigate
Water your lawn well at least twice a week. One can easily obtain a sprinkler that sprays different patterns in different directions.

    Lay a new lawn
You can enjoy a vivid green new lawn within hours, but it’ll last longer if you follow the rules.

    • Plant the sods within 12 hours of buying or having them delivered from your garden centre or grass depot. Keep them shaded (never leave them in the sun) and then water them – yellowing is virtually guaranteed! Make sure you buy your lawn from a reputable source rather than at the roadside, to eliminate the possibility of sparse, weed-infested sods.
    • Clean the area. Dig over the soil, add 3:2:1 fertiliser and level the surface with a rake.
    • Lay the sods tightly against each other.
