Broken heart syndrome or takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a temporary heart condition incited by extreme stress, such as the loss of a loved one.
After a stressful incident, a rush of adrenaline overwhelms the heart. This leads to symptoms similar to that of heart attack, like severe chest pain and irregular heartbeat. Luckily, patients recover quite quickly.
Researchers noticed that the syndrome is more prevalent in women, and that women are 2.9 times more likely to develop the syndrome after going through menopause.
