Chlorine sinks into hair shafts, where it mixes with colour molecules, initiating a chemical reaction that gradually tints your hair. This is especially problematic if your hair is blonde or highlighted.
The Easy Fix
If you swim on a regular basis, coat your hair with conditioner first. Also wear a swimming cap and rinse immediately after exiting the pool. Another great trick is to rinse your hair in tomato cocktail – the juice neutralises any green.
Best Bets
Try a colour-restoring product, such as Wella SP Silver Shampoo (R250), which gets rid of yellowing and discolouration of blonde or silver hair. If your hair already has a greenish hue, try a clearing shampoo, which also gets rid of product build up, or rinse with seltzer water, which gently strips away chemicals.
