Here are the five things you need to know before buying this fluffy little buddy:
This is not a long-term commitment – hamsters only have a life expectancy of one to three years.
Not all hamsters like to share a cage. Chat to the pet shop or breeder, before you buy, to find out what’s the best option for the breed you’re buying.
Hamsters need gentle handling to tame them – allow them some time to settle in when you first get them, and handle them gently and carefully. It can take weeks or even months before they get accustomed to being handled.
They’re nocturnal animals. Bear this in mind if your child wants to keep them in their room – they are active at night and might be disturbing.
Never bath your hamster – they can catch a cold. Yes, really.
