There is more to Stellenbosch than fine wine. This September, Stellies celebrates the entire Heritage Month with a treasure chest of attractions, old and new.
Fires will be lit at Delheim Estate for a traditional snoek braai; a bring-and-braai party will attract a merry crowd at Hazendal Estate, while Hidden Valley have teamed up with renowned chef Bertus Basson for a 2014 Gourmet Braai and Wine Festival with smoking hot events from 22 to 24 September.
Bodega restaurant at Dornier Estate will celebrate Braai Day (24 September) with some upscale outdoor grilling. And the iconic Lanzerac Hotel and Spa is going all out with a buffet banquet accompanied by its heritage wines.
Asara Estate will host a Pure Food Braai Market with live music and kiddies’ entertainment as well as expert braai tips. Middelvlei’s popular Boerebraai’s will be back too, with homemade pot bread, braaibroodjies and Ouma Annie’s pumpkin fritters – seven days a week.
Bites and Sites will be hosting inspirational township walks through Kayamandi, complete with an authentic Xhosa lunch prepared by the locals who will welcome you into their homes and hearts.
Why not spice things up in September and get your friends to join you for a Cape Malay Cooking adventure and learn more about the traditions of the Cape Muslim community with Foodies on Foot.
The Stellenbosch Valley sub-route’s wine estates, hotels and restaurants, including Middelvlei, The House of JC Le Roux, Van Ryn’s Brandy Distillery, Fleur du Cap and Neethlingshof will join the fun with an evening of wine tasting and gourmet glee with locally celebrated chefs.
If you love art, Tokara is where to head, 11 September, for the Wine Made Art event. Marié Stander School of Art students are painting with 2011 Tokara Shiraz to create artworks interpreting this year’s theme: 2014 World Design Capital – Cape Town.
Round things off with a bit of water fun with the paddling contest and the Eerste Tube Race at Spier Wine Estate.
