Travelers: Sally and André Cronjé
Destination: San Francisco, America
Dates: November 2010
Reason for Travel: Part of our round-the-world trip!
Our Little Black Book
The best hotel: We stayed at the Days Inn in Lombard street as we were on a tight budget. A chain similar to Holiday Inn, adequate for a quick stay and a place to plop down after a long day of sight-seeing
The best place for dinner: Anywhere on the Marina, but definitely try San Francisco’s famous chowder!
The best place for lunch: Ike’s Place, fantastic sandwiches fo, under $10. It’s the Castro area down town.
The best place for a drink: You’ll be completely spoilt for choice. This city is hip, happening and too cool for it’s own good. Try Bergerac in the SOMA area, the menu is run by a guy who was in the TV show Bar Rescue. The menu is divided into five categories: Approachable, Complex, High-Octane, Low-Octane, and Social.
The first thing travelers should do upon reaching this destination: Have a drink. You’ll need one after you’ve navigated the streets. Try Fisherman’s Wharf for a great vibe and a generous helping of chowder!
The best place to shop: For luxury goods, head straight for Union Square. If you’re on a budget, give Pier 39 a try.
The best way to get around: Rent a cadillac or anything else equally gas-guzzling and American for a real roadtrip feeling.
If you want to feel like a local you should…Go suburban and get out of the city. Visit Sausalito across the Golden Gate bridge and drive around the Muir area. If you have the time, definitely head into Sonoma and Napa Valley, the area’s wine country. It’s absolute heaven!
Watch out for…Pickpocketers, especially in the parks.
Don’t leave without…A fabulous selfie with the Golden Gate bridge behind you, a trip on a ‘streetcar’ tram, a visit to Alcatraz and a drive down windy Lombard street.
Insider tip: Make sure you have nerves of steel and ace driving skills. Navigating the steep streets of San Francisco will put hair on your chest. San Fran is bigger than you ever imagined.
