Travellers: Samantha and Doreen Scholtz
Destination: Phuket, Thailand
Dates: 15 December to 22 December 2013
Reason for Travel: This was my mom Doreen’s first overseas trip and we wanted to visit an exotic destination where we could indulge in some R&R and do some sightseeing.
Samantha and Doreen’s Little Black Book of Phuket
First things first: Upon arrival you will be exhausted from a long flight, so head to the beach or Patong main street for a traditional Thai massage.
Best hotel: We stayed at the Avista Hidewaway Resort and Spa, located about 5 minutes up the hill from Patong Beach. The hotel was close enough to be a short shuttle ride away from the action, but far enough from the buzz of Patong Beach for a quiet retreat. The hotel is a year old, with modern amenities including three beautiful swimming pools and a spa. This hotel falls in the luxury category, but we took advantage of substantial discounts for bookings made via Tripadvisor.
Best dinner: At Mr. Good’s Seafood, you choose your dinner from the fresh seafood display including fish, prawns, crabs and crayfish, and it is prepared for you in minutes. Try the pineapple and seafood fried rice with cashews, served in a hollowed out pineapple. It’s affordable too, with appetisers starting from 150 Baht (R50) and mains starting from 200 Baht (R70).
Best shopping: Junceylon Mall in Patong has major department stores as well as a grocery store (Big C) where you can purchase refreshments and luxuries at a much cheaper rate than you would diving into your hotel mini bar. There are also vendors selling souvenirs much cheaper than you would find on the streets.
Getting around: Hiring a scooter is the cheapest way to get around Phuket. Approximate cost is R800 for a week. Alternatively, should you not be keen on taking death defying scooter rides, there are many taxis and tuk tuks on the main road in Patong. There are also many tour operators offering island and land tours to the major attractions.
Watch out for: the tap water. Most hotels will supply you daily with bottled water. Avoid taking ice in your drinks where you can. Also pack a good insect repellent as well as a topical ointment to sooth any mosquito bites.
Don’t leave without: doing a speedboat tour to the surrounding islands, including Maya Bay, Phi Phi Lae and Phi Phi Don. The beauty of the crystal clear waters and rocky outcrops jutting from the sea is breathtaking.
Insider tip: A tip from a friend who visited this destination previously was to start your bargaining at 10% of the price indicated by the sellers. This will make for some funny exchanges, but chances are you will score your purchases at a bargain!
