Art in the bathroom is nothing unusual for Shirley Fintz and Russell Faclier of Tamboerskloof, Cape Town. ‘We spend a lot of time at home, so we wanted to be surrounded by beauty – even in the smallest room in the house,’ says Shirley.
The built-in tub and surrounding walls were covered with glass mosaic tiles, which creates both a quirky and calming effect. Two glass shelves above the bath display more art, candles and other fun items. The biggest impact is created by the two funky figures that Shirley painted on the old Oregon pine doors against a bright yellow background, creating an eye-catching focal point!
GREAT IDEA If you have a limited budget, cut glass mosaic sheets into narrow strips and add a row as a horizontal border above or in-between existing wall tiles to bring in an individual touch with pops of colour, say the experts at Tile Africa. If you want to be extravagant, tile an entire wall with glass tiles to create a beautiful, luminous ambience. Other trends include a chequered look with a combination of red and white for a dramatic burst of colour or black and white for a retro effect.
