Concentrate on perking up entrances, patios and outdoor entertainment areas to provide a warm welcome for guests

Here are some tips:
For added impact, place pots of pretty annuals at your front door. Dwarf marigolds, salvia, nicotiana and vinca need sun, while bedding begonia, impatiens, torenia, coleus and hydrangeas are ideal for shade.
Choose single- or double-flowered Marguerite daisy bushes (Argyranthemum) in white, cream, yellow, pink, apricot or red to add instant colour to pots on the patio. They will continue to flower generously if old blooms are regularly removed.
To provide vertical interest on a patio, grow climbing plants in deep containers and give them a trellis on which to climb. An old-fashioned tiered pot stand is perfect for displaying container plants in a corner on the verandah. Kumquat is a compact ‘mini’ citrus that grows to just over a metre and it’s ideal for a large pot on the stoep, while a potted calamondin with its tiny orange fruit will add a decorative touch.
