‘The soles of your running shoes are created for forward motion, but for gym classes such as Zumba, you also move from side to side,’ says fitness expert Sara Bowen. Without the lateral stability of your trainers you can twist your ankle.
The correct trainers may also boost your performance. For example it’s easier to pedal harder if you’re wearing stiff-soled cycling shoes.
Regular training shoes will carry you through the weight moves, group-fitness classes, cardio machine workouts and an occasional jog. But if you run several kilometres at a time, buy a pair of walking or running shoes as well.
