Your visual system – your eyeballs and the parts of your brain they connect to – makes up about 2% of your body weight, only. But it uses up to 25% of the nutrients you consume, says optometrist Jeffrey Anshel, author of Smart Medicine for Your Eyes. Protect your peepers with these three foods:
Salmon
Jeffery says, ‘Fatty fish is one of the best sources of omega-3s; these allow nutrients into your retinas and force damaging free radicals out.’ Getting enough of them can also make you less likely to have dry eyes.
Kale
Jeffrey explains, ‘This leafy green is rich in lutein, which helps prevent muscular degeneration and cataracts.’ Spinach and collard greens are also packed with this disease-fighting carotenoid.
Goji Berries
Zeaxanthin shields your eyes from the damaging blue light that fluorescent bulbs emit. While these berries are rich in the antioxidant, Jeffrey says, ‘Eggs and corn are also good (and cheaper) sources.’
