    Back In Time

Make a wall clock that will look as if it’s been in your family for generations

    20 February 2015

    You Will Need

    • Supawood disc
    • compass and protractor
    • pencil, scissors and long ruler
    • white paper
    • petroleum jelly
    • off-white enamel paint
    • paintbrushes
    • steel wool
    • wood stain in imbuia
    • sponge
    • acetate
    • craft knife and cutting mat
    • stencil glue
    • black craft paint
    • spray glue
    • rooibos tea bag
    • black spray paint
    • drill and 10mm wood drill bit
    • clock mechanism and hands

    To Make
1 Have a Supawood disc cut to size. The diameter of ours is 480mm.
2 Use a compass or a large round object of the desired size to draw a circle on the Supawood. Draw another similarly sized one on white paper and cut out.
3 Adjust the compass or use a smaller round object to draw a smaller circle inside each of the ones drawn in step 2. Cut out the small paper circle and set it aside.
4 Place a protractor in the centre of the Supawood circle and mark each 30° increment. Use a long ruler and a pencil to connect the corresponding marks to form 12 segments. Repeat with the large paper circle.
5 Draw a 2.5mm border around all 12 segments on the large paper circle, then cut out each segment.
6 Smear petroleum jelly along the thin outer border of the Supawood circle and paint with off-white enamel paint. Leave to dry, then use steel wool to remove the paint in places.
7 Apply wood stain to the entire Supawood disc, including the thin outer border, using a thin paintbrush for the frame and a sponge for the rest. Leave to dry.
8 Print out the letters I, V and X in a font and size of your choice. We used Times New Roman, size 120.
9 Cut the letters out of acetate using a craft knife. Use the stencils to draw the Roman numerals on the paper segments. Apply stencil glue to the back of the stencil, wait for it to become tacky, then position it on the paper. Use a dry paintbrush to fill in the numerals with black craft paint.
10 Paste the paper circle and then the paper segments onto the Supawood disc using spray glue. Rub out any air bubbles before the glue dries.
11 Age the clock by stippling wood stain onto the outer edge of the clock with a dry brush, blending it with your fingers. Repeat on the rest of the clock face, working in random areas.
12 Pour warm water over a rooibos tea bag, press it with a teaspoon to remove excess liquid, then dab it all over the paper areas to age the paper. Blot with paper towel, then smooth out the paper.
13 Spray the hands of the clock with black spray paint and leave to dry. Stipple off-white enamel paint onto them to create an aged look, then repeat with wood stain.
14 Drill a hole in the centre of the clock and attach the mechanism and hands.

    Did You Know?

    • You can purchase the mechanism and the hands of the clock from a jeweller.
    • Your clock should keep time no matter what size Supawood disc you use, provided you position the hands exactly in the centre.
