Easy to construct, this storage unit becomes a practical focal point in a child’s bedroom or a novel way to keep the garage tidy.
Quick project guide
Hard labour 5/10 (an extra pair of hands may be necessary)
Skill level 4/10 (requires power tools)
Time needed about four hours (excluding drying times)
Do it yourself for ±R480 (excludes paint products)
• The grid framework should be fixed to the wall using angle brackets
• Cut 305mm sections from the offcut pieces of 44mm x 22mm pine prepared for the construction of the storage boxes.
For the grid you will need
• twelve 2 400mm x 44mm x 22mm pine planks cut to: six 2 264mm; six 1 982mm; three 305mm
For the three storage boxes you will need:
• three 1 800mm x 305mm x 19mm laminated pine shelving cut to: six 445mm; three 305mm; three 330mm;
• ±seventy five 60mm cut screws
• cold glue
• primer and paint
• angle brackets
• 10mm wooden dowels
1 Start by constructing the grid framework. Lay the six 2264mm lengths alongside each other with the 22mm edge facing upwards. Mark 44mm from the ends, then mark 44mm wide bands every 400mm along the length. Then lay the six 1982mm lengths alongside each other with the 44mm edge facing upwards. Mark 22mm from the ends, then mark 22mm wide bands every 370mm along the lengths. In both instances, draw lines across all six planks. The lines indicate the positions where the pieces will intersect. Start by connecting the corners of the framework, as shown. Then fix the remaining four 1982mm lengths in position over the 2264mm lengths using the glue and cut screws. Remember to drill pilot holes before fixing the screws.
Note The 1982mm lengths are fixed to the narrow edge of the 2264mm lengths.
2 Use the cordless drill and 10mm drill bit to drill holes in the 1982mm lengths for the wooden dowels. See sketch for the positioning of the holes.
Tip Drill the holes at an angle. When drilling the holes keep the orientation of the hole in mind as you work. Wrap a piece of insulation tape around the drill as a depth guide.
3 Cut 100mm sections of 10mm wooden dowel using the handsaw and mitre box.
4 Fix the framework securely to the wall using angle brackets, as shown.
5 Construct the storage boxes according to the sketch. Fix the two sides (445mm x 305mm) to the base (305mm x 305mm) and then fix the top (330mm x 305mm) in position so that it overlaps the back of the box by 25mm. The 305mm x 22mm pine plank is then fixed to the overhanging edge, as shown.
